Today, more and more people are sensitive to lactose, also known as lactose intolerance. Due to different allergies and intolerances, the possibility of family accumulation always arises.
Can Lactose Intolerance Be Induced?Dr. Csikós Dуrбval, the Buda Allergy Center belgian, gastroenterologist doctor, this request was addressed.
Initially milk sugar is not a problemFrom the moment we are born, the breakdown of milk sugar in the small intestine lactase enzyme, apart from the very rare exception, if you have an inborn lactose intolerance. Their body is not able to process lactose in breast milk, so it can be diagnosed as early as a few days before the age of seven. Apart from this very rare condition, in the vast majority, the lactase enzyme does the job, it breaks down the lactose in the milk, so you don't consume any milk sugar or lactose.
Why is someone sensitive to lactose?
No matter what type of lactose intolerance we haveLactose sensitivity may be secondary when lactase enzyme activity is temporarily reduced due to various diseases (eg celiac disease, Crohn's disease), infections, and antibiotic intake. In this case, after the treatment of the underlying disease or the restoration of the balance of the intestinal flora (eg by taking probiotics), the symptoms of lactic intolerance usually disappear. Another type of lactose intolerance, the primary form where lactase enzyme activity is not reduced due to the aforementioned effects, is genetically determined. In this case, it is worth having a genetic screening test on your child.
What does genetic testing show?It is characterized by a different genotype in terms of the lactase activity alone. With a simple, pain-free test, we can determine exactly which genotype it belongs to and basically tell whether or not the lactase enzyme will be depleted. Genotyping can be carried out by genetic examination of the blood or of the parotid smear.
When is it recommended to have it done?Dr. Duru Csikós said that if one parent has a proven primary intolerance to lactose in adulthood, then genetic testing should be performed on a child over the age of 5, as the disease may be cancerous. Lactose intolerance it cannot be prevented, therefore, even if the study also verifies that the child is also of the genotype that the lactase enzyme production decreases with age, the introduction of a lactose-free diet is only possible after the onset of symptoms.
